James Barden

1. Welcome:

In the absence of the OL President & Secretary, Vice-President Nick Marchant chaired the AGM.

Nick Marchant opened the meeting by wishing the OL President, James Barden, a speedy recovery from a hip operation.  He also extended his thanks to the Underhill family and friends who attended a Thanksgiving Service held in memory of OL, Alex Underhill, who had died recently. Nick Marchant thanked members of the OL committee and the school’s Development staff for all work behind the scenes on behalf of the Society. As Vice-President, Mr Marchant also extended the thoughts and best wishes from the entire OL community for OL VP, Chris Throndsen (ex Tower boy and Master), who had planned to be in attendance at the AGM but who is currently in hospital.

2. Cancellation of sports:

Nick Marchant reported that the scheduled netball and hockey matches that were due to take place were abandoned due to minus temperatures and heavy snow. However he extended his appreciation to Laura Newbery and Alfredo Furmanek for their work in organizing the teams. The shooting went ahead with a young (5th formers) SLC side captained by Max Brown. However, the OLs won by a narrow margin of victory and were presented with the Gale Cup.

3. Brief summary for the year since the last March 2017:-
The Vice-President reported on progress over the previous year. Since this time last year, the OL Society has welcomed another year of leavers, a number of whom attended OL Day and the AGM.
June’s Summer 2017 OL Day was a great success and the AleFest sold out with over 500 attendees. This year’s AleFest will be held on the 30th June, 4pm – midnight in a marquee on the chapel lawn. It will include three bands plus Kent gins and dodgems.

The first official regional reunion was held in the West Country and the second has been booked at the same venue on 29th September in Exeter.

In 2017 nearly a hundred OLs and former masters were at the College for the Annual OL Dinner with attendees flying in from as far as Australia to reunite.

In autumn there was an OL reunion in Hong Kong which was attended by the Principal and a good number of local OLs. A Whatsapp group for over 50 of the OLs has been established (and is growing daily), and since the reunion a number of them (all different age groups) have got together again for another dinner. The next official OL event is set for November 2018.

The Australian chapter which has been going for 25 years held their annual lunch in Sydney in October.  There were also a lunchtime drinks reception in Perth in December. Both activities will be repeated this November.

The 1879 Society’s first lunch was held after the Remembrance Service at the Principal’s house. Invitees were those OLs and other members of the SLC community who have kindly decided to leave a legacy to the college.

The candlelit Carol service for OLs and parents in December was completely full.

The London Drinks event was held successfully in January at the German Gymnasium, a conveniently located restaurant and bar in St Pancras. The School’s Development staff are looking for a new and slightly larger venue for the next event, plus other opportunities in Central London.

The Vice-President advised his fellow OLs of two forthcoming major events. The first is the Charity Gala Ball in aid of the Sports Appeal.  This will be held on 26 May at the School and will include a band, entertainment and a three course dinner. Tickets will be going on sale shortly and can be purchased through Kerry or Kelly. As an added incentive there is an early bird discount if a table of 10 is reserved today.

The 2018 Annual OL Dinner will be at the historic Drapers Hall in the city on the 6th October. It is anticipated that tickets will sell quickly so it was recommended that OLs reserve places through Kerry or Kelly.

The Vice-President had been advised by the OL secretary that the OL News would be out shortly.

The Development Office has also had a new database installed which included the potential to create a new OL Society website with a ‘members own’ area in which to update their details. It was hoped that if the process goes smoothly, this will be going live in May.

The St Lawrence College Development team who work on the Society’s behalf have expanded in this year. Kelly Jury, the wife of an OL, has joined the Office along with Director, Anthony Medhurst, to develop the alumni programme further.

The Society committee continues to meet a few times a year to coordinate the Society’s activities. The OLRC and the OLGC are very successful although always looking for more people of all levels. Members have a lot of fun as well as playing competitively. As every year, the OL Society donates £300 to each of these to societies to assist with their costs. Nick Marchant thanked them and wished them well for another successful year against other Schools’ alumni clubs!

Election/re-election of officers:
A proposal to re-elect the Officers of the OL Committee and also elect new members was put forward by the Vice-President.

The President, James Barden, and Secretary, Kerry Brown were re-elected. The role of Treasurer is now fulfilled by the college.

Nick Marchant and Laura Newbery were due to stand down by rotation this year but would be standing for re – election. Mark Dunnachie was proposed to be elected as a new member.

All in attendance voted unanimously in favour of the above members and officers.
